Floral Folklore: Marigold Magick

Just in time for Scorpio season, Marigolds are a’ blooming. Get to know the Spiritual Side of this flower, along with some floral folklore and history. The Marigold is interesting because it has deep meaning in many places. To me, I like to honor this bloom for its divinatory qualities, a flower that awaken dreams and connection with those that came before us.

Here’s some history + floral folklore:

  • Marigolds are commonly known to be the flower of Dia De Los Muertos / day of the dead, a celebration honoring our ancestors before us. the magical scent of this flower is said to wake our ancestors from the dead and lift them into this realm. others see this flower as a flower of pain and grief, as when the Spanish invaded, the Aztecs viewed this as a symbol of this invasion, and a massacre to their people and way of life.

  • The latin name of this flower is Tagetes which came from the name tage. whom was an ancient Etruscan prophet who became famous for his teachings in divination.

  • We may commonly know of marigold from the name Mary's gold. one tale states that Mary used marigold flowers as coins and when THIEVES stole her bag, they found marigolds instead of coins. another is that those who could not afford coins, would place marigolds on mother Mary's altar.

A Few More Fun Flower Facts:

  • Welsh people use marigolds to predict the weather, if the blossom was small and closed, it represented stormy weather.

  • Witches were said to wear marigolds around their necks to stop people from gossiping about them and to keep negativity from coming their way.

  • There was also a belief that keeping a pot of marigolds outside your house would help with hard relationships and bring more peace to the home.

  • The marigolds are used in RELIGIOUS and wedding ceremonies in india and nepal. they are used to appease the gods.

This flower holds a lot of solar energy, and can be related to the sun and the lion, invoking creativity.

What can't you do with marigolds? Here are some of my favorite marigold crafts.

  • Make a marigold garland, simply get fishing line, a needle and chop off their heads!! And stream them onto a garland just as you would a necklace. place this on your mantal, string it on a tree, enjoy it!

  • Get a few bunches and place them in bud vases all over your house. add them to your altar!

  • Create an ancestral altar with items and pictures representing your lineage and ancestors ~ place the blooms on there with magic and love!

  • Make a marigold bath, add the leaves and flowers and enjoy the magic of this. Thank your ancestors as you do this and see if you get any messages from the tub!

  • Add marigold to your nightstand or dream altar and see if they speak to you in the dream time.

  • Watch the movie coco. It's not a craft but it's definitely not a waste of time.
